The town I live in becomes more than a town.

Newport is a drag. A total drag and we all know it. Buttfuck, Oregon essentially.

But over the past year, I have poured my heart and soul into a screenplay. A screenplay based upon my adventures and thoughts within Buttfuck, Oregon, with characters based on the people I know in Buttfuck, Oregon. So many of my friends are caricatured into this work of art. So much time has been spent trying to perfect it. I’ve written the ending three times now. I will probably spend the next two years punching it up and starting production whenever I can.

What’s interesting is that it was inspired by how much of a drag Buttfuck, Oregon is, but now I can’t walk around Buttfuck, Oregon without ideas forming in my head. I have conversations with people and I think about if I could work it in to the film. Recently I attended a bonfire and I had not been to the beach in a while. I live on the other side of the highway and don’t go to the beach unless I really have to. But as I walked from Jump Off Joe’s to the Nye Beach Turnaround (a top the ledge, not on the beach) it was sunset. And all I could think about was how I could capture the beauty on camera. When’s the best time to shoot. Where’s the best time to shoot. Utilize the sounds of the ocean into some sort of beach-like atmosphere.

To be honest, this film is a little arty. I liken it as a mix of Clerks, Paranoid Park, and Pulp Fiction. The characters are stuck in a rut and don’t know what to do with their lives (a la Clerks). The dialogue is quite punchy (a la Pulp Fiction). The cinematography which I have been storyboarding is quite atmospheric and arty (a la Paranoid Park). Indie darlings, I know.

So that’s what I think. What was once a total drag (still is a drag), has become more. It is my hometown, yes. But it is also my work. My creation.
